Dear Webmaster,
Thank you for your continuing support of cloth diapers and cloth diaper education. We are working to grow the Real Diaper Association for you.
RDA Real Diapers, Real Babies Photo Contest

Do you have a great, enticing, creative and well-shot photograph of your baby in a cloth diaper?
The Real Diaper Association is launching the Real Diapers, Real Babies Photo Contest this week.  Winning photos, as selected by RDA members*, will grace the pages of our first annual RDA Calendar, with the top three winners to receive special prizes.  The Grand Prize winner will choose a photography or cloth diaper prize, sponsored by diapershops.com, with Runners-Up to receive prizes from  Babies in Bloom and Mama Momo. Keep up-to-date with the contest status on the RDA blog.

Proceeds from sales of the calendar (available in October via the RDA Café Press shop) will help to fund the RDA's support of local cloth diaper advocacy and education as well as special projects like the joint project with the Real Diaper Industry Association to facilitate the use of cloth diapers in the daycare setting.

*If you're not already an RDA member, join here.  Real Diaper Association is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization.  All donations are tax-deductible.

Cloth Diaper Retailers: We have a few sponsorship slots available for the 2010 RDA Calendar.  If you are interested, please email Heather at heatherm@realdiaperassociation.org to request the sponsorship details.
RDA Cloth Diapers in Daycare Survey Analyzed
The Real Diaper Association (RDA) conducted a survey on the use of cloth diapers in daycare facilities.  We received over 250 detailed responses.  The responders were largely parents who had talked with daycare providers about their willingness to use cloth diapers on their children while caring for them. Maybe you were one of them?  If so, THANK YOU!  We learned several important things by analyzing the survey results:

    * Parents who educated themselves about this issue and were persistent about educating daycare providers to use cloth diapers were at times able to turn a "no" into a "yes."
    * There are some daycares providers who exclusively use cloth diapers in their facility.
    * Daycare providers who refused to use cloth diapers usually feared they were unsanitary and were generally unfamiliar with cloth diaper usage.
    * Occasionally daycare providers blamed state health and licensing regulations for restricting the use of cloth diapers in their facility.
    * This is a nation-wide issue.  There are no regional patterns for the acceptance or rejection of cloth diapers in daycare.

A working group composed of RDA and Real Diaper Industry Association (RDIA) members is currently working on a plan to facilitate the use of cloth diapers in daycare.  These survey results are helping to guide the direction the project will take.  The proposal for the project will be presented at the RDIA Annual Meeting in Las Vegas in September.  If you are interested in working on this important issue, please contact me!

New Real Diaper Circle Leaders On Board
Angela Imes of Plano, TX
Angela is working on starting a Real Diaper Circle in Plano, Texas. She has twin girls, who have been cloth diapered from birth, and is getting her diapers ready again for an expected baby soon :) Angela was elected to the RDA Board of Directors in April and has been our Treasurer since then. As a CPA, Angela has been invaluable in this role, helping to ensure RDA is handling our accounts appropriately to maintain our 501(c)3 non-profit status. She also works
tirelessly on projects to keep RDA funded and running. I'm sure she'll make as big an impact at the local level as she is already making in the national organization. Please join me in congratulating / welcoming her in her new role!

Elizabeth Wickoren of the Twin Cities in Minnesota
Elizabeth founded a non-profit called Teeny Greenies that lends a day's worth of cloth diapers to anyone in the local community who is interested in trying cloth diapering. The focus of Teeny Greenies is getting diapers in people's hands and homes to try them out. Her focus for the Real Diaper Circle of the Twin Cities is on creating a place for cloth diapering parents to meet others and exchange information and support. It will be a way for new local families to explore and learn about cloth diapering. The two organizations should complement each other nicely and, together, should put a lot more Twin Cities babies in cloth diapers!
August 14 - A Big Day for the Cloth Diaper Industry
The cloth diaper industry - and all industries that make, sell, and distribute products for children 12 and under -- is coming up to a deadline August 14, 2009, that could change the cloth diaper landscape considerably. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) requirements change the way all children's product manufacturers and retailers do business.

As of August 14, all products are required to have labels that track materials and details of production. The statute also requires third-party testing for lead by that date. Though the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a stay of enforcement until February 2010, some state Attorneys General, those empowered to enforce the law, have said they will follow the date on the statute itself and begin enforcement in August.

August 14th will be a big day for the cloth diaper industry.

Real Diaper Association Mission Statement: The Real Diaper Association is a collective non-profit organization in which parents and small businesses take the lead in creating a cultural shift to increase the use of simple, reusable cloth diapers. We connect current cloth diapering parents to the long history of cloth diapering. Cloth diapers are real diapers. The Association organizes local advocates and activists for cloth diapers through a member-supported resource center which plans campaigns, trains organizers, distributes educational information, supports local groups, and connects users to the U.S. Cloth Diaper industry. Local Real Diaper Circles reach users face-to-face with knowledge and tools to make cloth diapering accessible and acceptable to U.S. parents, who have the power to change the world one baby at a time.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Thompson
